The New Year's wizard costume is a versatile outfit suitable for both carnivals and theatrical performances and themed matinees. The recognition of the image and the effective appearance of the costume are provided by three simple attributes: a hat and a magic wand.

Wizard's Cloak

The most important element of the costume, which will take the most time to make, is the cape. To make the raincoat look the most colorful and expressive, it is recommended to use a bright, shiny fabric: large patches of satin, rayon, satin, tricotin or fabrics with lurex, shiny dusting.

The fabric is folded in half, the lower edges are smoothly rounded, in the upper corner they make a small cutout for the neck of the cloak. The hem is folded over and sewn, after which it is sheathed with decorative shiny braid. The neck of the cloak is also processed with braid and long strings are sewn on, which will hold the cloak on the shoulders of the wizard. On the entire surface of the cape, you can sew multi-colored shiny stars or embroider it with sequin patterns.

Wizard hat

As a headdress, you can make either a wide-brimmed hat or a high cap. The hat is made of dense, but flexible cardboard: a circle is drawn equal to the width of the hat, a circle is cut out in the center, the diameter of which corresponds to the circumference of the child's head. A cardboard strip is glued to the base of the hat, the length of which is equal to the circumference of the head, the height is optional. The bottom is glued to the top of the crown of the hat. After the glue dries, the finished hat can be painted in the desired color and decorated with a shiny buckle, sparkles, stars.

It is even easier to make a wizard's cap: a circle is drawn on a sheet of thick paper, the radius of which corresponds to the height of the future cap. If you plan to make a cap with margins, then you will need another circle - it is drawn, stepping back from the first circle of 10-15 centimeters, after which both parts are cut out.

One side of the smaller circle is cut along a line drawn from the edge to its center and folded into a cone, fixing the junction with glue or tape. Small cuts are made along the edges of the cap, the paper is folded up and the margins are glued. The finished cap is covered with fabric in the color of the cloak or painted, decorated with braid, beads or various pendants.

Magic wand

Smooth tree branches, sticks for Chinese cuisine, etc. are suitable for making a magic wand. An even, smooth stick is painted with gold paint or tightly wrapped with shiny cloth, foil, gift wrapping paper and secured with glue or transparent adhesive tape. The knob of the stick is made in the form of a star from cardboard or thin tin, glitter is glued along the entire length of the stick or painted with "magic" patterns.

How to sew a raincoat raincoat raincoat with a hood for a girl: pattern, photo

A raincoat is an irreplaceable thing in a child's wardrobe, especially if he is still small. A waterproof raincoat will protect you from rain and wind, in it you can run to the store, clinic, or just breathe the air on the street. If it is not so easy for a kid to hold an umbrella correctly, with a raincoat everything is easier - put it on and go.
Also, there is nothing difficult in sewing a raincoat for a girl with your own hands. Try this to experience significant savings. Children grow up quickly, and it is likely that a store-bought cape will last only a couple of seasons.

IMPORTANT: What should be the first raincoat? That's right, waterproof. It is important to choose the right fabric. Oxford with PU coating, membrane, taslan or bologna will suit you.

To sew such a beautiful and practical raincoat for a little girl, you don't even need to build a pattern. Allocate literally an hour of time and prepare:

  • a piece of waterproof fabric
  • chalk or sapon
  • tape measure
  • ruler 1 m
  • scissors
  • needle and thread
  • braid
  • gum
  • backstage
  • buttons
Hooded raincoat - raincoat: pattern.
  1. Spread the fabric out on the floor or table. You will need to draw on it and then cut out a square. To find out the size of its diagonal, measure with a centimeter the distance from 3 phalanges of the middle finger of the girl's left hand to 3 phalanges of the middle finger of her right hand (along the left forearm, left shoulder, back, right shoulder, right forearm).
  2. If you want to sew a long raincoat that covers the child's hips, you will need to cut a diamond with a smaller diagonal equal to the distance specified in the previous paragraph, and a larger one - the same value multiplied by 1.5.
  3. The diagonal of the square will also be needed to make a cut for the head clearly in the middle.
Finish the seams around the edges: sew or decorate with tape.
  4. For the hood, you will need to draw and cut out a rectangle. You will fold it in half and sew on one side. On the other, tuck and sew so that you can stretch the strings or drawstring through the hood.
  5. Sew the hood to the base of the raincoat.
  6. To prevent the raincoat from scattering around the sides, the child does not get wet, sew buttons on the sides on one side, and loops on the other to make a fastener.
  7. If you feel like it, you can sew a waterproof skirt under the raincoat. For this you need a rectangular piece of fabric. On top, make a fold on it and thread an elastic band, sew from below or process with braid.

Therefore, if your daughter is to play the role of this heroine of a fairy tale at a matinee, a Christmas tree, a theatrical performance, as an alternative to a red satin cap, you can sew her a cape with a hood.

DIY magician costume: master class with step by step photos. Interesting trick and a hat with a secret.

DIY magician costume

Dear readers of Native Path! I am pleased to present you another master class. This master class on making a magician's costume with their own hands was sent to us by Irina Vladimirovna Usacheva and her son Anton (10 years old).

Irina Vladimirovna writes: “We would like to participate in the competition with our New Year's costume. We made this magician's costume together with my son - he helped paint and glue decorations. The child himself is delighted with the costume, a special interest lies in the fact that you can show a real trick - remove the rabbit from the hat, which he did on the Christmas tree ten times for everyone :). We hope that our idea will be useful to someone else! "

So, let's start making the costume together with Irina Vladimirovna and Anton! And we would like to thank the sponsor of the New Year's master classes competition for cooperation.

The magician's costume consists of two parts: a hat and a cloak.

Materials for making a magician costume

For the manufacture of the magician's hat, we you will need:

  • a large cardboard box (we took a pizza box for the base of the hat),
  • gouache - a small jar of blue gouache and a little black,
  • piece of hat elastic - 40 cm,
  • black satin ribbon 60-65 cm,
  • foam rubber at will (and opportunity),
  • glue.

For the magician's cloak needed:

  • shiny fabric (taffeta) 80 cm with a width of 150 cm.
  • to decorate the cloak - stars made of shiny fabric or foil paper, silver tinsel (you can use scraps of tinsel).

How to make a magician hat with your own hands

Step 1. We wrap a strip of cardboard 17-18 cm high around the head, add 2 cm for gluing and the same amount for shrinkage (I did not know that cardboard shrinks when it dries, so our hat does not fit on our head and sits on the top of our head, it is better not to allow this and take into account in advance).

This is important: The strip must be cut across the corrugation lines so that it does not break, but bends evenly.

We glue the strip into a ring.

Step 2. We cut out a large circle with a diameter of 36-38 cm (the size is given already taking into account shrinkage). We put a cardboard ring on it exactly in the middle and circle it exactly along the contour, without adding a single millimeter! We cut out the inner circle without damaging it with nail scissors.

Step 3. We cut out many stripes of about 2 x 5 cm from plain paper (accuracy is not required, you can cut it out by eye). With the help of these stripes we connect all three parts of the hat: glue the upper joint on the outside, and the lower one on the inside. We try not to leave gaps.

Step 4. We paint the magician's hat with gouache (a child can help you here). Outside, we painted the hat with blue gouache (almost the entire 20 g jar was used to paint the magician's hat), and the brims on the inside were painted over with black gouache. We did not paint the hat inside, so that later the head would not get dirty.

Site author's note: I will add advice from my own experience of making different attributes and games for children with my own hands. To prevent a painted hat or other thing from getting dirty, you can apply varnish over the gouache with a brush. The most common woodworking varnish (sold in glass bottles at hardware stores) will work. Then a protective layer is created. The finished item does not get dirty, it is stored for a long time, it can be wiped with a damp cloth. But the varnish smells strong until it dries completely, and it will not be possible to stay in the room during the day.

Step 5. Decorate the magician's hat with stars and pieces of tinsel (glue them on PVA glue). We poke holes on the sides in the crown with an awl, insert an elastic band, fasten with knots outside. We cover the knots with a satin ribbon, which we wrap around the crown, stretch and fasten the ends with glue. The hat is ready!

How to make a magician's cloak with your own hands

Step 1. Fold the fabric in half and cut out a semicircle.

Step 2. Cut out a strip of fabric 4 x 30 cm. With this strip we process a section in the middle of the top so that we get a drawstring. We pass the lace for tying (our lace is sewn from the same fabric).

Step 3. Tuck and hem all the edges of the magician's costume.

Step 4. We sew stars and tinsel to the magician's cloak.

To complete the look, wear a pantsuit with a tie under the raincoat and draw in the mustache with a cosmetic pencil.

Now attention! Cover the hat with a cloak! We make passes with our hands and say magic words! We remove the cloak and ... tadam! We get the rabbit out of the hat!

How does a trick work, or a hat with a secret

How does it work? The whole secret is in the magician's hat.

From furniture foam rubber (we had a piece 5 cm thick, it is probably better to take 3-4 cm), you need to cut a circle that will fit tightly into the hat (To carve out such a circle, we turn the hat over and circle the top as a pattern). We put a toy in the hat, cover it with foam rubber. To quickly reach the rabbit, you just need to press your hand on the edge of the foam rubber - it will stand upright and the toy can be easily removed.

Well, the wheels of the New Year's costume competition are moving!

Today we have participant number 2, mother Lilia.

Lilia immediately responded to the offer to participate in the competition (secretly telling me that she wants to win an e-book "" - "... to get ideas ...")

It is very easy to win the book - comment on the entries of the participants and the prize is yours! By the way, read the article to the end, there is another surprise waiting for you.

Let's go back to Lilia's competitive works. She introduced so many of them that other mothers need to get ideas from her herself.

Here's what she writes:

I am sending you a photo of all the suits that I sewed for the children with my own hands for kindergarten matinees. Including this New Year.

Wizard, Gnome, Mushroom, Frog, Carrot, Cockerel, Snowman, Sun.

I drew ideas from the Internet, and I myself came up with patterns from old Soviet books on sewing that I could download ...
The costumes are not very complicated, but my children were always the best at the matinee or one of the best, because other mothers are not particularly zealous with costumes, and the purchased ones are so terrible (not to mention the sizes - it is impossible to find your own size.

Therefore, as soon as I started sewing, I got involved and now I just sew myself.
Suits are made of crepe - satin and velvet scraps.

I could not resist and asked a few questions, and Lilia answered them.

Lilia, you have submitted so many works! Thanks! Let's make it clearer for our readers, tell us a few words about creating costumes. To begin with, what are the names of your wonderful sons?

Andrey (senior) and Pavlik (junior)

So, a gallery of Lilia's works and a few answers about creating costumes

Is the Wizard Hat made of cardboard template? Were the stars sewn on or glued on?

The inside of the hat is stuffed with stuffing material. There is no cardboard base, and the visor is a piece of wallpaper inside. I put the pattern on which I sewed it into it)). The stars are all glued with special glue for fabric in a sewing store I bought. The stars are cut out of golden crepe satin and trimmed with the edges of the visor of the cap and cloak.

The Gnome has very interesting shoes - how did you make them, can I get some details?

Oh, yes, I fiddled with these chobits)). I cut the sole out of my old suede boots. She sewed it to her from the same velvet that the costume was sewn by the chobitok himself. I didn’t find the pattern, so I drew it myself along the same pattern from the same velvet chobits. And between them I stuffed with stuffing material, so that the sock stood and were voluminous. The bows are in crepe satin, and the buckles, if you noticed, match the one on the belt I bought at the sewing store. On the belt the same, but more .. There was a lot of trouble, but my masik was the best)) Other mothers of their children then took pictures with him at the matinee.

Oh, Gribochek is just super! It turned out to be a very characteristic costume, it fits your son 100%. Share the secret of making a hat, please.

It's simple in the mushroom. Everything - the bottom is the base - a circle with a hole for the head is glued to it, like a Chinese panama hat is so round, and on top of it, to give the shape of a mushroom, a bit of stuffing material. It is trimmed with velvet, and the bottom is crepe satin with the same shirt and pants. Well, I bought a ready-made butterfly in a sewing store there is full of such good and glued it.

I can say the same about the Frog costume - how the head was made, it looks like a very complex design.

The pattern found the head on the Internet. Since the top was sewn a bit crooked, I decided to stick the tongue on the side, it turned out funny in my opinion. Eyes - pupils in a sewing store bought and glued. Inside is stuffing material. A hat is sewn for the head - a four-blade and an elastic band is sewn to better hold it on the head.

Lilia shared with us a pattern and a description of the costume.

With the Carrot costume, everything is more or less clear, only the carrot on the chest and cap is an applique? Sewn on or glued on?

Both carrots were sewn and stuffed inside with stuffing material, and the grass was made from green ribbons

“Cockerel” - again a question about the headdress - how did you do it? And what kind of fabric was used for sewing a suit.

The headdress is a six-blade hat. I found a pattern on the website of the "Solnyshko" magazine. I drew and stuffed the scallop myself. Beak, purchased eyes glued. The fabric is completely all velvet.

Modern stores of goods for the holiday offer their customers a huge assortment of all kinds of carnival accessories and ready-made masquerade costumes. Today you can buy an outfit for any fairytale character. But is it possible to claim originality by choosing a factory-made costume for a masquerade? It is much more interesting to do it yourself. How to make a magician costume?

The Top Hat is the illusionist's main accessory

What element makes the magician's outfit recognizable? That's right - this is a top hat, necessarily large and high, the one from which the most famous lords of illusion get rabbits, scarves and other interesting items.

The easiest way to make such a hat is from very thick paper (such as whatman paper) or flexible cardboard. Cut out a rectangle - this will be the longest part of the hat. Fold a cylinder out of it, fix it using glue, tape or stapler. Cut out the top - a circle corresponding to the diameter of the cylinder. Glue on one side of the workpiece. Next, you need to make the fields of the headdress. To do this, circle the existing cylinder on the paper. And then draw another circle with a larger diameter around it. Cut out this element and glue it in place.

The top hat is ready, but your magician costume will turn out to be completely uninteresting if you do not decorate the hat. Paint the hat with paint, cover it with a cloth or glue it over with colored paper. Before decorating your hat, decide on the main color of the outfit. Traditional is aged in dark colors with bright accents. If you wish, you can make this outfit brighter and more original.

Making the magician's cape

Many illusionists go on stage in a cape to create a more mysterious image. Such a spectacular accessory is easy to make with your own hands. Take a piece of fabric of the right size and cut out a rectangle. The mantle can be up to mid-thigh length or go down below the knees. Consider the height of the model when cutting the material.

If you need to make a magician's costume as quickly as possible, choose a material for the raincoat, the edges of which will not crumble without special processing. A ribbon must be sewn into the upper part of the rectangle, thanks to which the mantle will be tied around the neck. When time permits and the quality of the finished suit is important, do not be too lazy to process all the edges of the future raincoat.

Interesting idea: the mantle for the magician can be taken from any other suitable fancy dress. If you have an astrologer in your home dressing room, try on his cloak and top hat. And it is quite possible that you will not have to specialize anything on purpose.

Basic clothing

So, we have two essential elements for the illusionist's outfit - a top hat and a robe. The rest of the things for creating a fancy dress are sure to be found in your wardrobe. Take dress pants and a shirt. It's great if you can find a vest from a three-piece suit, but you can do without it. Choose basic clothes that match the main color of the fancy dress. If you made a magician's costume with your own hands in a bright color, and it is difficult to find the same trousers and a shirt, they can be solid black. A good option is also the timeless classics: dark bottom, white top. Be sure to wear simple black dress shoes to complement your suit.

Essential accessories and useful props

Not sure what else to complement the magician's costume with? Photos of famous illusionists can help you find interesting ideas. Many famous magicians complemented their stage outfits with bow ties. And it’s a great idea to do it at home. You can make your look more expressive by picking up thin white gloves.

If you are making a New Year's costume for a magician for a children's matinee, it is appropriate to decorate it with tinsel and shiny elements. For a serious adult illusionist costume, any accessories that emphasize the classic style are suitable. Think when making a costume - will you show magic tricks at the holiday? If so, you should rehearse them carefully and pick up all the necessary props for such magic.

Should a magician be able to perform magic tricks?

An interesting addition to the illusionist's masquerade outfit will be a deck of playing cards, multi-colored scarves, or it will be useful to learn a few simple tricks on the eve of the masquerade. Believe me, it is not at all difficult that even a small child can show the disappearance of a coin or a playing card.

If you are making a magician costume for a school-age boy, you can prepare a few more complex numbers and arrange a mini-performance at the party. However, if you do not want to show tricks, you do not need to do this. At any event or holiday, the most important thing is that the costume is original and fits well.
