How to keep your hands away from your face. How to keep your hands away from your face How to keep your hands busy when you think

The empty hand problem is a serious problem. If you smoke a pack a day, you bring a cigarette to your mouth about 200 times a day! Your hands and lips are used to being busy.
When Iris tried to quit smoking, she sat on the couch and held in one hand a bottle of mineral water, and with the fingers of her other hand she tapped on the table where her cigarettes usually lay. This did not help her, and after a few hours she got into the car and went to the store for cigarettes.
Starting to follow my plan, Iris, in the early days of her rejection, decided to work with her art students: teaching them how to mix paints, hold a brush, and unfold the canvas. When she had nothing to do with her hands, she took the brushes and palette that were in her workshop and at home. After you decide to quit smoking, you will have many moments when you will not know what to do, where to put your hands, what to do with your mouth. How can you, like a dummy, sit on a chair, watch TV and not hold anything in your hands?

The solution to the problem lies in the need to do something to occupy your hands and be where you can not smoke, until giving up cigarettes becomes part of your nature.
Rachel was not allowed to smoke in her new job or in the library where she volunteered. Knowing that the day of rejection would only last a few hours helped her when she came home in the evening.
When Phil used various smoking cessation methods, he didn't know where to put his hands, especially while watching television. To distract himself from the urge to smoke, he usually held a bag of chips in one hand and a bottle of drink in the other.
After Phil decided to quit smoking, he began to play the rosary and play the ukulele. This hobby drove the members of Phil's family crazy, because he played poorly and at the same time almost continuously. Phil decided not to drink beer on rejection days, so he switched to soft drinks. When watching sports games on TV, he still eats a lot of chips (no salt), but he quit smoking.
Once you decide to quit smoking, you will be faced with the “empty hand problem”, but this problem will not bother you as much as if you tried to quit smoking abruptly - once and for all.
With my plan, you will be able to quit smoking gradually and gently, and you will be able to cope with minor annoyances.

On the day of refusal
- Musicalize. If you don't have a guitar, buy one (a cheap one will do) and take a couple of lessons or learn to play it yourself (for example, Paul McCartney had to learn on his own as he is left-handed). If possible, play the piano or other instrument; even a tool such as a harmonica can help you keep your hands busy and temporarily distract from the urge to smoke. This will be just what you need.
Go to a music store and buy a kalimba. It is a small tool that can be carried in a bag or briefcase. Originally from Africa, this instrument sounds like a small xylophone and can sometimes be heard on Caribbean music recordings.
Don't play music on smoking days. Save your music for rejection days. Roy loves music, especially tango and bossa nova; he always rejoices listening to the Getz Wall and Charlie Bird.
On rejection days (and now he has no other days) Roy plays music by Goetz, Byrd, Virginia Rodriguez and other authors.

Sometimes one plus entails another. Roy was interested in Latin American music, so he decided to take a Spanish language course, which he hadn't practiced since high school. Next year he plans to travel to Argentina, Brazil and Chile for a month, and he wants to be able to avoid language problems during the trip. He also wants to learn how to dance.

Write poetry or stories. Be creative only on rejection days. Keep a diary on the day you refuse. If you publish it, you may not get as much money as the author of star biographies, but you will enjoy writing anyway.

Take up knitting or embroidery. Thus, you will take both hands and you will hardly want to spoil your creation with the smell of tobacco smoke. Buy yarn from a specialty store.
When knitting or embroidering, you will not want to smoke.
- Get busy typing. Typing really helps as your hands are in constant motion and you can pour negative energy onto the keyboard. Forget about mistakes; you can fix them later if you want. Print letters to friends and family. Email them, gossip.

After you start quitting smoking, you may feel like your hand, in which you used to hold a cigarette, is becoming heavy. You will have the feeling that you do not know where to put your hands. Start typing, this is a great replacement for a cigarette - after all, your fingers will be constantly busy.
After a few days of refusal, you will get used to not having a cigarette in your fingers, but it won't happen all of a sudden. Your brain will gradually reprogram your fingers so they don't yearn for a cigarette. Over time, it will start to seem strange to you that you once loved holding a cigarette.

First you need to understand what kind of need you are trying to satisfy with the help of smoking. So, for many, a smoke break is one of the few ways to get their five minutes of rest in the middle of the working day. Indeed, going to the smoking room, although it provides the body with a hefty portion of toxins and carcinogens, makes it possible to get up for a while and move away from the computer. But who prevents you from simply leaving the office and walking at least along the corridor? Look out the window, think about something pleasant and calm, exchange a few words with colleagues. By the way, the last recommendation is especially useful for "social" smokers, those who go to smoke "for the company", for the sake of informal communication with friends and colleagues. It is quite possible to chat without a cigarette, however, in this case, it is better to choose non-smokers as well. Firstly, it will protect you from the dangers of secondhand smoke, and secondly, it will reduce the urge to "take up the old".

Create a small notebook in which you describe the sensations that arise on the path to a healthy life. Next time you want to take a smoke break, read your notes - they will show you how much you have already done, and will help you not to stop there.

Another common problem for ex-smokers is overeating, due to the obsessive desire to chew at least something and replace smoking with food. Most often, seeds or candies are on hand. Of course, they are less harmful than cigarettes, however, the abuse of these types of snacks often leads to weight gain and dental problems. It is much wiser and healthier to switch to natural delicacies: carrot sticks, apple "chips", dried fruits, natural cereal bars with a low sugar content, etc. However, if you just want candies, do not deny yourself this pleasure. In the end, shedding a few extra pounds is much easier than getting rid of the effects of a heart attack or stroke.

The discomfort associated with giving up a bad habit is felt differently by everyone, it is not always associated with an obsessive desire to chew something. If, in the absence of a cigarette, you have nowhere to put your hands, buy a rosary, a wrist expander, a couple of puzzles (the same Rubik's cube!) Or any other small object that you can carry with you and touch your fingers when the urge to smoke becomes too strong. By the way, puzzles, logic games and similar entertainments are excellent helpers in the fight against nicotine addiction. The fact is that obsessive thoughts about smoking rarely pester you for more than five minutes in a row. If you occupy yourself with some interesting business as soon as there is a tangible desire to smoke, then the risk of breakdown and return to the bad habit will be significantly reduced.

In general, the more interesting and rewarding your life becomes during the period of quitting smoking, the higher the chances that there will never be more cigarettes in your life. Try to make a list of enjoyable activities that you never knew how to do. This can be learning to play a musical instrument, visiting the pool, or even just walking and excursions. The main thing is to stay as long as possible where smoking is prohibited or there is no time, and to avoid situations in which a cigarette may be the main and only entertainment.

And a few more ideas from Maria:

Another crazy project has unexpectedly become the star of Kickstarter.

Before writing the first lines of this note, I studied a number of psychological studies that prove - repetitive movements allow the person to calm down and focus... That is why many of us in emergency situations like to "click" with a pen, banging our fingers on the table, and so on - this is absolutely normal.

To make any of these processes easier, more convenient and fun, brothers Mark and Matthew McLachluns came up with the Fidget Cube ("Fidget Cube").

They placed a fundraiser for its production on Kickstarter and in a couple of days managed to collect more than 2.5 million dollars from 70 thousand sponsors with the required $ 15,000.

Today we can safely say that this project will become one of the most successful in history crowdfunding.

What can you do with "Fidget"

    1. Click. To do this, you no longer need a pen or something like that - one cube is enough. Interestingly, out of the five buttons intended for this, two do not emit sounds and three emit - suitable for every taste.

    2. Smooth. Many gamers are so used to PS DualShock sticks or something similar that they simply cannot calm down without touching them. There is a solution.

    3. Click. On-off, on-off, on-off. For some, it helps them focus.

    4. Breathe. Maybe you have seen so-called disturbing stones on sale? You need to touch them with your fingers and breathe deeply - this is soothing. One side of Fidget is designed for just that.

    5. Twist. Bearing ball and combination lock - they will help you finally stop sweating and start doing business.

    6. Rotate. Something similar happened on the music center from my deep youth. I loved making it louder.

Six sides - six use cases.

    It's simple, isn't it?

Steep. But you can't hang it on the keys - that's bad

I have not yet decided to order myself this interesting trinket, which until October 20, 2016 costs only 15 bucks. But I really liked the idea.

Interestingly, the creators offer a cube not in one, but in a whole scattering of different options for every taste - there are even matte black solutions that will perfectly match the iPhone 7. It's a pity, you can't hang Fidget Cube on keys instead of a keychain - no no fasteners, and he is very big.

Respect to the madness of the audacious. They push the world forward

"Fidget" once again proved that "a simple modern man" missed emotions. That is why projects that are designed to give them are fired quite often. Something similar happened with the Prisma app a couple of months ago - we see a similar story with Fidget Cube.
