Beginner craftswomen, going to knit any thing, usually choose simpler patterns. And this is correct - having honed your skills on simple patterns, you can proceed to more time-consuming, but beautiful drawings. From this kind of abundance, one can single out simple "braids" or "plaits", which, in principle, are the same thing. The only difference is in the knitting technique: braids are one overlap of certain loops, and plaits are a whole system of overlaps, folded into one full-fledged pattern. But since the technique for performing them is similar, therefore they are combined into one type. Later in the article, both subspecies will be considered.
"Braids"
Knitting with knitting needles "braids" is not difficult, just at first it will be a little inconvenient to perform them. To knit them, you will need additional knitting needles or pins - you will need to remove the loops on them before crossing. The movement of the loops in the pattern is to the right and to the left - it depends on the pattern that is knitted on the canvas. In the case of using braids to decorate the shelves, a certain symmetry should be observed at the intersection of the loops.
Simple "braid"
To knit a simple "braid", it will be necessary to separate 8 loops on the main canvas - the number of loops can be changed, but it should be taken into account that the cross does not entail the formation of a hole and the corresponding assembly of the canvas. To knit a sample, you need to dial 14 loops, 8 of which are actually a "braid", 4 loops are needed to highlight it and 2 pieces are edging. Next, the sample is knitted in the following sequence:
1. First row: hem, purl 2, knit 8, purl 2 and hem.
2. 2, 3 and 4 rows knit according to the pattern.
3. Fifth row: hem, purl 2, remove 4 pieces on a pin or auxiliary knitting needle, without knitting and holding before work, knit the next 4 loops, transfer the loops from the pins to the left knitting needle and knit, it turns out crossing to the left. Removing the loops on a pin or auxiliary knitting needle and leaving them behind the canvas leads to the formation of a criss-cross to the right side. Finish the row with two purl and hem.
4. From 6 to 12 rows should be knitted the way the knitting looks, and then cross the loops, as in the fifth row.

Simple double braid
This pattern consists of two weaves, but it is not at all difficult to make them. In it, you can change the number of loops in the weaves, the distance between the "braids" and it is possible to carry out "dilution" with other relief patterns. To complete the pattern, you need to collect so many loops so that their sum is a multiple of 12, add three loops to them for symmetry and two edge loops. In the example below, cast on 17 stitches. 
Knitting must be done in accordance with the following scheme:
1. 1 and 5 rows are knitted in the sequence - hem, 3 front, 3 purl, finish the strip with 3 purl and edge.
2. The second row and all backs are knitted according to the pattern.
3. In the third row, it is required to cross to the left, in the following way - remove the edge, make three purl, then three front, remove the next three loops on the pin, and knit the three pieces following them with purl, return the loops from the pin and make their facial. Finish the strip with three purl and hem.
4. In the 7th row, you need to cross to the right. Perform in a sequence - hem, purl 3, remove the next 3 pieces on a pin, knit 3, return the loops from the pin and knit them with purl, knit 3, purl 3 and hem.
Starting from row 9, repeat the pattern from the beginning of the rapport.
