Along with the protective signs that were applied to windows, doors and utensils, protective dolls were used. One of them will be discussed in the article. Such a talisman is widespread throughout the territory where the Slavs lived. It is absent only in places where mountain ash does not grow. This is due to the protective value of the tree.

Here I wanted to say about what is usually the basis for choosing a name for rag dolls and give a couple of examples, but I stopped in time. After all, it turned out that it was not so easy to group the names in this way, because the name for each doll was determined in a special way, despite the fact that the main factors in this were the purpose of the doll, events that took place or occurred, calendar time or historical characters.
Now the idea came to my mind to group Russian rag dolls not according to their intended purpose, but according to the time of their manufacture, dividing the year into four periods - spring, summer, autumn and winter. Although, then what about those dolls that are created at the turn of the seasons? Okay, we'll think about it. You just need to make a calendar in which the dates are marked with the name of the doll, which was made earlier on that day. Yes, I probably will. But this is so, thinking out loud.

Rowan doll - history and meaning
The value of the Rowan doll is determined magical properties mountain ash, and this is, first of all, increased protection against evil spirits and other anger. The ancient Slavs have long noticed that the Khmyrs, Shishigs and Kikimors bypass the mountain ash and are afraid of it. Therefore, for a long time they began to make protective amulets and amulets from mountain ash wood, the berries of which were very successful as a medicine and food additive.
Therefore, every autumn in the second half of September, the basis for a rag doll was made from mountain ash sticks, which was then dressed, decorated and called Mountain ash, giving it a special status strong amulet for the home and the whole family. The Ryabinka doll was fixed near the entrance to the house, she was the first to meet the requested and uninvited guests, preventing the dark forces from feeling calm and confident. At the same time, a man with a stone in his bosom, or what a sinister person immediately began to get nervous and fuss, like in a frying pan, wanting to leave the house as soon as possible with such prudent owners, then they had no time for profit, to be alive. This is the main meaning and purpose of the Ryabinka amulet doll of the ancient Slavs.
Rowan doll - how to make
The Ryabinka rag doll, apparently, was distributed almost throughout the entire territory of the ancient Slavs. How else to explain the fact that now there are about a dozen different ways making this doll? Most likely, in different villages for Ryabinka, they chose the most familiar way for them - for some it was a doll on a cross, for others - a post, for others - a knotted doll. I can only assume that those options in which rowan sticks were not used were made in places where rowan did not grow, or such a doll was made as a souvenir.
We have determined for ourselves that the version of the doll, when it is based on two crossed rowan sticks, will most accurately correspond to the purpose of the amulet doll, therefore we made just such a doll. Most likely, this is precisely the doll's ability to carry out its protective function. So, we make a cross, we fix it with red thread. In exactly the same way, we began to make other dolls, for example, Sacrum, Simeon Stylpnik, Koza, Kostroma and others.
For the head and arms, you will need a square white rag and a bunch of rags. We crumple the rags in a fist, embrace the head end of the cross with it and wrap the whole thing with a white rag, fixing it at the level of the neck. Two opposite ends from this flap form arms, the other two are tied to the body. Now we dress - a shirt, a skirt, an apron with a belt, a warrior and a kerchief or scarf. Additionally, you can decorate the doll with rowan branches, but you can do without this, because the power of the doll is inside her.
This is how the traditional version of making a rag doll of the Ryabinka amulet looks like. All other ways of working on this doll are distinguished by the creation of additional elements - someone makes Ryabinka's legs, shoeing them in bast shoes, someone hangs doll children on her, making them in the form of Kuvadka, Pelenashka and Pokosnitsa, someone puts them in the hands of little ones birds ... In general, they do - who is good for what, immediately coming up with some explanations for this. I believe that it is possible with great success to create designer dolls based on Russian rag dolls, and not mix everything into one heap and fantasize at the same time. But this is everyone's business, as they say, it's not for me to tell them. We completed our task - we told that there is such a Ryabinka doll, what it is for and how it can be made.

Today, 23 September, was revered by our ancestors as the name day of the sacred mountain ash tree. Rowan has tremendous energetic power. Its energy field is very powerful, capable of positively affecting a person's health, improving his condition, attuning, helping to enter a state of harmony with the world around him. Especially rowan helps women, strengthens them feminine strength restoring.
Rowan endows with the gift of foresight and gives spiritual strength, develops extrasensory abilities. The mountain ash is also able to fight the negative energy of the home, cleansing and protecting it from the evil eye and damage and other influences on the subtle plane. Rowan knows how to give inspiration for creativity.
But for this, you need to be able to communicate, feel and understand with mountain ash. Our ancestors these days, when the mountain ash is especially strong, its fruits are ripe and sweet, went to the forest to collect medicinal berries. And they not only went with the goal of picking berries, but to make a mountain ash amulet, ask the sacred tree to take away the disease or give additional strength, help restore health.
And Slavic women on this day made sure to make a protective mountain ash doll. It was based on a cross made of mountain ash sticks, or one mountain ash stick, wrapped in a linen rag. And always decorated with rowan berry beads!
According to an ancient tradition, I made such a doll today. Today, many are carried away by purchased wooden churas, forgetting that the real amulet of your house must be done by YOUR hands! The concentrated work took three hours. At first it was difficult to work, I was doing mountain ash for the first time and I could not imagine its final image. I was a little nervous, confused the threads ... Then I just called on my ancestors for help, turned off my thoughts ... and the work suddenly went easily. Hands by themselves, began to create!
While I was working on the image of Mokos-mountain ash, suddenly many amazing memories of my ancestors began to come by themselves, then stunning vivid pictures of antiquity began to flash. The faces of women in the clothes of Ancient Rus floated by, some mysterious rituals, huge round dances in the fields ... One can skeptically say that all these were fantasies, but one can say that it was the ancestral memory that was awakened. But the doll came out very beautiful, it became clear and light in my soul, and many forgotten memories from childhood about my grandparents warmed my heart.
Now my mountain ash stands in a red couture, bright, beautiful, and as if it glows, like a small sun, all the time attracts the eye. It's a pity not to take a photo of the camera.

1 Necessary materials.

The Ryabinka doll is one of the most beloved among folk dolls... She bewitches with her femininity, soulfulness and some kind of invisible strength. Much has been said about the meaning and essence of this doll, but this one looks different for each craftswoman, and this is great! After all, there are no templates and standards in creativity.
