Defender of the Fatherland Day. History of the holiday. Defender of the Fatherland Day: history of the holiday, how to celebrate, congratulations Holiday February 23 title

February 23, Defender of the Fatherland Day, which has become a truly national men's day not only in Russia, but also on the ruins of the once mighty USSR. It is also celebrated in Ukraine, Belarus, Transnistria and Kazakhstan.

How did this red date appear on our calendars? - from the distant 1918 to the present day.

How did the holiday on February 23rd come about?

For the first time, the anniversary of the newborn Red Army was celebrated in 1919. The February days marked the year of the confrontation between the German troops and the newly created army of the new state. Now there are many options for interpreting what happened in February 1918, but it is not our task to plunge into the intricacies of historical intrigue. Therefore, we will focus on the facts that influenced the fact that today is February 23rd - a truly national holiday:

  • For the first time his official name found the holiday in 1922. Then it was named the Day of the Red Army and Navy.
  • In 1923, the 5th anniversary of the young Red Army was widely celebrated. And although in fact the Decree on the organization of the Red Army was adopted at a meeting of the Council of People's Commissars on January 28, 1918, historically there was a tradition to celebrate the holiday on February 23.
  • February 23, 1938 was approved anniversary medal"XX years of the Red Army", and the holiday became not only official, but also solemn.
  • During the Great Patriotic War, February 23 acquired special significance. Each family was waiting for news from the front from relatives and friends, so Red Army Day was celebrated by everyone. They congratulated their beloved warriors in writing and in absentia and hoped that they would return home as soon as possible. It was in those years that the origins of people's love and attention to this date lie.
  • During the Great Patriotic War, this holiday was celebrated in a special way. On February 23, 1943, the Red Army defeated the enemy at Stalingrad, turning back an almost 20-month German offensive. Exactly one year later, on February 23, 1944, the army of our country celebrated its holiday by crossing the Dnieper. On February 23, 1945, the Red Army celebrated already on the territory of Europe. Our country was liberated from the fascist invaders.

February 23, Soviet era

After the war, since 1949, the holiday was renamed, and February 23 became known as the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy. A tradition has developed to celebrate this event solemnly and on a grand scale:

  1. On this day, military parades were held, fireworks were organized. Veterans of the army and navy were awarded orders and medals. At first, those who were related to military service were honored, but since during the Soviet era most young men served in the army, the holiday gradually became more widespread.
  2. It is not known who presented the first gift that day. Most likely, at first these were small souvenirs, mementos, official awards. Already in the second half of the twentieth century, there was a tradition to present certificates, medals of honor, and then valuable gifts to those who served excellently or distinguished themselves in fulfilling their military duty.
  3. The tradition has migrated from the official tribunes to ordinary families. And on February 23, festive tables were laid, gifts were prepared, and men in working collectives were congratulated on the holiday of the Soviet Army and the Navy.
  4. Gradually, the difference between those who served in the army, and those who, for some reason, avoided it, began to fade. Indeed, how to congratulate the plant staff? Choose only those who served, and send the rest away from the ceremonial meeting dedicated to the holiday? This is how this day began to turn into a universal men's holiday.

Defender of the Fatherland Day or Men's Day?

After the Soviet Union became part of history, the Day of the Soviet Army was canceled. This holiday has not been celebrated since 1993.

But since 1995 we have been celebrating Defender of the Fatherland Day, congratulating not only those who serve in the army and law enforcement agencies, but also those who protect our families every day - fathers, husbands, brothers.

According to the established tradition, congratulations, gifts and treats in honor of men are prepared on this day.

It should be noted that attempts have been made more than once to replace February 23 with other dates. So, in Ukraine, the Day of the Armed Forces was introduced, which is celebrated on December 6. Nevertheless, the brotherly Ukrainian people continued to celebrate their favorite date - February 23. Since 1999, Defender of the Fatherland Day has been returned to the calendar again, to the great satisfaction of the Ukrainians.

Since 2006, February 23 in Russia has been declared a day off, which only added to his popularity.

Our history is complex and confusing. Over time, any event is interpreted differently, and seen differently. But this holiday has long and firmly enjoyed popular love and recognition - Defender of the Fatherland Day, an unofficial men's day, a holiday of men who take care of us.

On Defender of the Fatherland Day, they congratulate the employees of the Russian Armed Forces, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and other military operations, and lay flowers at the monuments of heroic soldiers.

On Defender of the Fatherland Day of Russia, it is customary to congratulate men of all professions and ages, including young men who will have to defend the Fatherland in the future.

They honor Russia and women on Defender of the Fatherland Day, as many of them, risking their lives, protect their compatriots from various dangers and cataclysms.

In the hero cities, festive concerts are held on this day, and in the evening the sky will be illuminated holiday fireworks.

history of the holiday

A holiday was born in revolutionary times - the Civil War and the threat of military intervention flared up in Russia, which demanded the creation of a regular powerful army from the new Bolshevik government.

Therefore, the Council of People's Commissars in January 1918 issues a decree on the creation of the workers 'and peasants' Red Army. The call to stand up for the defense of the homeland was published on February 23, and then widespread mobilization began, which helped to resist the enemy troops.

It was first planned to celebrate the first anniversary of the creation of the Red Army on the day of the signing of the decree, then postponed to the Sunday following February 16, which fell on February 23 that year.

For two years they did not remember the military holiday - they realized it in 1922, and a year later, on February 23, they celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Red Army throughout the country.

The holiday has changed its name more than once over its 100-year history - at first it was called the Day of the Red Army, and in 1946 on February 23 by Stalin's decree it was renamed the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy.

On Defender of the Fatherland Day, all the military were honored, to which almost every citizen could refer himself after the war. Over the years, they began to congratulate all men on the holiday, even those who had never served in the army.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian authorities did not cancel February 23, but simply renamed the holiday to Defender of the Fatherland Day.

Since 2002, Defender of the Fatherland Day has received the status of an official day off, and February 23 has become a holiday for all those who defended, defends or will defend the country, and not only as a professional day for the military.

Defender of the Fatherland Day is celebrated not only in Russia - it is also celebrated in a number of CIS countries, including Belarus and Kyrgyzstan.

Women have their own legal holiday - March 8, which for many years has been a red day of the calendar and a non-working day. Men were deprived of such a holiday-day off, but since 2002, our most men's day of the year has also become a day off. No more holiday inequality!

The most men's holiday We, of course, have the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland on February 23rd. On this day, women congratulate their loved ones - beloved, dear and only ones: husbands, fathers, brothers and sons. Each family has its own scenario of the celebration, but there are also some traditions that are common to all.

Gifts for February 23

First of all, it is gifts for men on February 23... They can be very different - from a warm knitted scarf to a fishing set. The gift should be selected taking into account the taste preferences of the person to whom it is intended. You can give your grandfather a warm sweater or glasses case. Husband - an original cigarette case, leather gloves or a book by his favorite author. For his teenage son, the future defender of the Motherland, a designer set, a new player with many functions or a computer "shooter" that he has dreamed of for so long will become a wonderful gift!

In general, it so happened that women, as a rule, do not dear gifts for men. It is believed that this is the lot of the stronger sex - to spend a lot of money on gifts. Therefore, our men usually do not expect anything grandiose. But the point is not the price of the gift, but the fact to make him a pleasant person.

A man with a sweet tooth will also be delighted with the cake prepared especially for him by his mother or wife. The car enthusiast will be delighted when, on the morning of February 23rd, he finds his car, which has not been washed for a long time, sparkling with cleanliness both inside and out. See how many opportunities to make nice gift beloved man? And it is not at all necessary to have a plastic card with five-digit amounts with you.

On the eve of the celebration, children love to make crafts by February 23, which can then be happily given to their grandfather, father or older brother. These are salted dough products, homemade postcards, and embroidered napkins with the symbols of the holiday. Mothers and grandmothers must necessarily participate in the process, helping, where with advice, and where with deed.

How to celebrate February 23rd

The room in which the celebration will be celebrated can be decorated, for example, with ribbons, balloons and posters with congratulatory inscriptions.

Tip 1: What is the correct name for the holiday on February 23

Children are also happy to participate in creating a festive interior, drawing pictures on a military theme or making appliques. Because February 23 is the day of the Defender of the Fatherland, you can decorate a festive room in khaki or camouflage. This is, of course, an option for a creative family.

You can search the Internet for funny ditties and poems by February 23 to perform them at home at the holiday. If children are growing up in the family, folklore with too frivolous content should be avoided. It is better to learn a song dedicated to dad or grandfather together with the child - everyone will be pleasant and joyful.

On this day, any creativity is welcomed - singing, recitation of poetry, always on a military theme, since this is the Defender of the Motherland Day. On the table can be any dishes prepared simply, "soldier style". If the family is large, then some kind of competition or any competition acceptable on the scale of an apartment will be a very good pastime. All family members must take part in the event.

You can also organize military style party: the same khaki and camouflage in the design, military paraphernalia, aluminum "soldier" dishes, porridge with stew for hot and military contests. For example, competition "The best orderly": two couples are involved. One in a pair is the "wounded", and the second is the "orderly". Give the orderlies a roll of bandage or toilet paper... The task of the orderly is to "bandage" the wounded as quickly as possible, having spent all the bandage or all the paper.

You can spend fast army dress up competition... Remember, probably, that a real soldier must have time to get dressed before the match burns out. You will need loose clothing (it will be worn over your own clothing) - a shirt, pants, a hat, preferably something in a military style. One "but": clothes must be worn inside out. And be sure to fully button up. Who quickly?

Any games will do, even for children. If only it was fun. You can spend game "minefield"... Scatter, for example, tennis balls on the floor in a random pattern. The participant should be blindfolded and sent on the way - across the room. If he steps on a "mine", then he has lost. Or you can count the number of mines caught - whoever has fewer wins. You can joke about the last participant: when his eyes are already blindfolded, you need to quickly remove all the "mines" it will be very funny to watch how the "soldier" walks across a safe field, afraid to run into a mine that does not exist.

In families where there are front-line soldiers, the memories of the elders about the hostilities that took place in the 40s, about the difficult post-war times of the past era will be very appropriate. You can take out a family album and look through it, remembering all those who gave their lives on the battlefield for the welfare of their descendants.

The final stage of the military-style party and just a family feast in honor of February 23, to the delight of children, will be rockets fired from the balcony into the night sky.

The history of the holiday dates back to January 28 (January 15, old style) 1918. On this day, against the backdrop of the ongoing World War I in Europe, the Council of People's Commissars (the de facto government of Soviet Russia), headed by its chairman Vladimir Lenin, adopted a Decree on the organization of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army (RKKA).

In the first days of January 1919, the Soviet authorities remembered the approaching anniversary of the decree of the Council of People's Commissars on the organization of the Red Army. On January 10, the chairman of the Supreme Military Inspectorate of the Red Army Nikolai Podvoisky sent a proposal to the presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee to celebrate the anniversary of the creation of the Red Army, timed to coincide with the next Sunday before or after January 28. However, due to the late submission of the application, no decision was made.

Then the initiative to celebrate the first anniversary of the Red Army was taken over by the Moscow Soviet. On January 24, 1919, its presidium, which at that time was headed by Lev Kamenev, decided to time these celebrations to the Day of the Red Gift. This day was arranged by the appropriate commission at the All-Russian Central Executive Committee with the aim of providing assistance to the fighting Red Army men. The day of the red gift was set for February 16, but the commission did not have time to hold it on time. Therefore, the Day of the Red Gift and the Day of the Red Army, timed to coincide with it, were decided to be celebrated on the Sunday following February 16, i.e. February 23.

In 1920-1921. No Red Army Day was celebrated.

On January 27, 1922, the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee published a decree on the 4th anniversary of the Red Army, which said: "In accordance with the decree of the IX All-Russian Congress of Soviets on the Red Army, the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee draws the attention of the executive committees to the upcoming anniversary of the creation of the Red Army (February 23)."

In 1923, a resolution of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee Presidium, adopted on January 18, said: “On February 23, 1923, the Red Army will celebrate the 5th anniversary of its existence. On this day, five years ago, the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars of January 28 was published the same year, which marked the beginning of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army, the stronghold of the proletarian dictatorship. " However, this statement did not correspond to the truth, since the mentioned decree was published in the central newspapers almost immediately after its adoption.

The 10th anniversary of the Red Army in 1928, like all the previous ones, was celebrated as the anniversary of the decree of the Council of People's Commissars on the organization of the Red Army on January 28 (15 according to the old style), January 1918, but the date of publication itself, contrary to the truth, was directly linked to February 23rd.

In 1938, a fundamentally new version of the origin of the date of the holiday, not related to the decree of the Council of People's Commissars, was presented in the "Short Course on the History of the CPSU (b)". The book stated that in 1918, near Narva and Pskov, "the German invaders were resolutely rebuffed. Their advance to Petrograd was suspended. The day of the rebuff to the troops of German imperialism - February 23, became the birthday of the young Red Army."

Later, in the order of the People's Commissar of Defense of the USSR of February 23, 1942, the wording was changed: "The young detachments of the Red Army, who first entered the war, utterly defeated the German invaders near Pskov and Narva on February 23, 1918. That is why February 23 was declared a day birth of the Red Army ".

In 1951, the last interpretation of the holiday appeared. The History of the Civil War in the USSR indicated that in 1919 the first anniversary of the Red Army was celebrated "on the memorable day of the mobilization of workers to defend the socialist Fatherland, the massive entry of workers into the Red Army, and the formation of the first detachments and units of the new army."

In the Federal Law of March 13, 1995 N32-FZ "On the days of military glory of Russia", February 23 is officially called "The Day of the Red Army victory over the Kaiser's troops in Germany in 1918 - the Day of the Fatherland Defenders".

In accordance with the amendments made to the Federal Law "On the Days of Military Glory of Russia" by the Federal Law of April 15, 2006, the words "Day of the Red Army victory over the Kaiser's troops in Germany (1918)" are excluded from the official description of the holiday, and is also stated in the only including the concept of "protector".

The material was prepared on the basis of information from open sources

The holiday of February 23 has a history rich in various unexpected events. The celebration was repeatedly renamed and postponed to other dates. The emergence of a significant event was associated with the birth of the Red Army, but in modern Russia the holiday from a purely military one was transformed into a more universal version, briefly referred to as Defender of the Fatherland Day. Today, February 23 in the country is celebrated very widely and magnificently, and congratulations are accepted by all males, both adults and children. On the eve of a significant day, various solemn events are held in educational institutions, enterprises and organizations, at which they honor the strong half of humanity and in every possible way admire such masculine qualities as courage, courage and the ability to always come to the rescue of those who need it.

February 23 - the history of the holiday and its modern meaning in Russia

The history of the February 23 holiday in Russia is rooted in the distant past, directly related to the moment of the overthrow of the tsarist regime and the Decree on the creation of the Red Workers 'and Peasants' Army, issued by the Presidium of People's Commissars of the young Soviet Republic. This significant event happened on January 15, 1918, and the treasury allocated 20 million rubles for the formation of combat units, which at that time was considered a truly enormous amount.

In Petrograd on February 21, the first center for the reception of volunteers began active work, and Vladimir Lenin spoke in the streets and squares, urging citizens to join the ranks of the defenders of the young Socialist Fatherland. The recruitment went quite tensely, but in the end the required number of people was found and the newly assembled detachments were able to repulse the external and internal enemy.

Initially, they wanted to celebrate the anniversary of the Red Army on the day of the signing of the decree on its creation, then they considered February 17 as a festive date, but in the end they allocated the next Sunday for the celebration, which fell at that moment on February 23. True, for some mysterious reason, the military holiday did not take root and for four years it was practically not remembered either in society or at the state level.

The date acquired a second life only in 1922, when a decree was issued from the pen of the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee on the solemn celebration in the country of the fourth anniversary of the formation of the victorious and glorious Red Army. In 1923, the significant day was celebrated very widely and pompously, and not only in the capital, but in all, even the most remote regions of the state. It was then that the date for the first time received an official name - the Day of the Red Army, and this name was subsequently approved by the Revolutionary Military Council of the young Soviet Republic.

During the reign of Joseph Stalin, the attitude towards the holiday was somewhat changed. At the insistence of the authorities, the date was surrounded by various myths and a lot of legends were created around it, saying that on February 23, 1918, the brave Red Army men dealt a crushing blow to the enemy troops stationed near Narva and Pskov. Thus, an attempt was made to destroy the facts of the defeat that were unpleasant for the country and the signing of an ultimatum presented by the German side.

After the victory of the USSR in the Great Patriotic War the perception on 23 February in the country changed again. The army was admired, and the military, literally, were carried in their arms. Since 1946, the holiday has become one of the most beloved among the people, and almost every family considered it their duty to celebrate. Around the same time, it became known as the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy. Years passed and the holiday gradually lost its purely military color. Gradually, starting on February 23, they began to congratulate absolutely all men, including even those who, due to certain life circumstances, did not serve in the army.

The meaning and meaning of the holiday on February 23 in modern Russia

The meaning and modern meaning of February 23 in Russia are somewhat different from what was accepted in the USSR. In 1995, the deputies of the State Duma tried to assign a new name to the significant date, containing information about the victory of the Red Army over the military formations of imperial Germany. However, this long and not entirely true name only lasted for a few years.

In 2002, the State Duma returned to discussing this issue and renamed 23 February as Defender of the Fatherland Day. In addition, the date was declared non-working and the connection of this event with the military actions of 1918 was finally severed.

V last years the military coloring of the holiday has faded somewhat, and it has become much more universal. It is celebrated not only by men who bravely defend the borders of our Motherland from enemies, but also by those who have never held weapons in their hands and only protect their families and loved ones from dangers and hardships. In addition to adult representatives of the stronger sex, on February 23, congratulations are accepted by boys, youths and young people who are just about to show themselves as defenders of both the Fatherland and their relatives. The warmest, sincere and kind words on this day are also spoken to brave, courageous women who have dedicated their lives to serving in the army, law enforcement agencies or structures designed to protect the population from various dangers and cataclysms.

Celebration on February 23 takes place in all cities brightly and splendidly. The first persons of the state, public figures and representatives of the deputy corps speak welcoming words to the heroes of the occasion. Flowers and candles are laid at the monuments and memorials of the heroes.
