Do-it-yourself sewing of diapers for newborns. Do-it-yourself cocoon diaper pattern. Velcro diaper for newborns

Diaper- an invariable part of the "dowry" of the newborn. Even now, when mothers use diapers to their fullest, and they resort to swaddling less and less, the supply of diapers in the house will not be superfluous.

It is very easy to sew the diapers yourself. It is for those who, like me, decide to do this, the instruction below. I tried to ask all the questions: the number of diapers, chintz and flannel diapers - how many, the size of the diapers, cutting (+ handy advice that I used to sew them myself), edge processing.

Where can diapers be used except for direct swaddling?

  • You can put them on the changing table when changing your baby's clothes (changing a diaper).
  • Use for placing in a stroller while walking.
  • Put it on your shoulder before picking up the child (after all, clothes are not always clean).
  • Take with you to the doctor's appointment (although someone prefers to use disposable diapers in this case).
  • Cover the baby while sleeping when it gets hot under the covers.

How many diapers does a newborn need and which ones?

The number of diapers is different for different mothers. It all depends on the chosen "system" - on whether you are going to swaddle the baby or not. Sometimes mothers even have to change their plans a little. For example, you were not going to swaddle the baby, but the baby jerks his hands in a dream and wakes up from his own movements - in this case, you can slightly swaddle the baby during sleep. Someone prefers to leave the pens free and swaddle to the waist. In general, there are various options. And you can choose your own only when the crumb already appears in your house.

So, the number of diapers will depend on the decision to swaddle or not to swaddle your baby. If you are going to practice swaddling, then they need much more than in the case when you plan to dress the baby in undershirts-diapers-rompers.

To begin with, you can get a conditional minimum. Let's say a dozen diapers should be enough for the first time. For insurance, you can buy a package of disposable (disposable diapers are on the list of things that you will take with you to the hospital; maybe you will have them).

According to preliminary calculations, you can get 10-15 diapers. Although some mothers who use diapers, according to reviews, 5-6 are enough. For my spring baby I sewed 9: 6 chintz and 3 flannel (despite the fact that I used).

Now about what kind of diaper it should be. Diapers are thin and thick (depending on what material they are made of; most often - from chintz and flannel). If you are expecting a baby to appear in the fall or winter, then you may want to have more flannel in your arsenal than chintz.

Diaper size for newborn

The size of standard store diapers is 80 * 110. But since we are going to sew the diapers ourselves, we have cards in hand - we can choose any "dimensions". Anyone, but not really. On the "width" we will have one strict limitation - the width of the panel of the source material. But on the "length" we are not limited by anything.

Experience shows that it is more convenient to use diapers bigger size than 90 * 90. First, the baby is growing rapidly. Secondly, large enough diapers can be used later instead of a sheet in the baby's bed.

For example, diaper sizes may be convenient. 80 * 125cm, 80 * 130cm(the first parameter is the width of the material).

How to sew the very diaper for the baby?

Material

So, the first thing you have to do is buy the material you want. Buy it with the expectation of shrinkage (sometimes shrinkage reaches as much as 5%) and allowances (about 1-1.5 cm on each side). If you have an overlock, you do not need to add hem allowances.

The overlock is completely optional. For some reason, in the decree it seemed to me that without him I "could not live." And what? We bought it, I swept the diapers (and also the curtains) - and that's it, it’s idle! It is ideal to "ask" for tea with some girlfriend who has an overlock.

In order not to reach the calculator, use.

There, in the fields, enter the number of diapers, their size (length), shrinkage in percentage and an increase in the processing of edges (if you fold, and not just overcast). The script will calculate everything for you, taking into account the entered parameters.

"Convenient" advice: when I sewed diapers, I made it easy to calculate the required amount of material. I took exactly 4 meters and after washing cut a piece into 3 equal parts - it turned out 3 diapers measuring about 80 * 130. This makes it very easy to buy the right amount of fabric. If you want "variety" - you can take 4 meters of two or three different colors.

If you buy a little more flannel, it doesn't matter. There is always a place where this material can be applied. For example, you can sew reusable pads in a bra that are very useful in establishing lactation (there is an instruction). This will save you money: you can't store enough disposables, and there are only 4 reusable ones in the reusable set, you will have to wash them often. And so - you can sew as much as you like, and choose your best option in thickness.

Preliminary preparation

Before you start sewing, the fabric must be washed (preferably at 60 ° C for durability). So far, not for hygienic reasons, but simply so that he "sat down". After washing, you can already start cutting directly.

Instructions

Spread the fabric out on a flat surface. Measure the sizes you need and cut the blanks for future diapers. That's all, it remains only to process the edges!

Cut or not cut the edge of the fabric when sewing the diaper? This issue is approached in different ways. Personally, I trimmed the edges, but someone does not trim and then does not process the edge edges at all.

The edges must be overcast (with a 4-thread seam) or seamed on a typewriter with a simple or zigzag seam (who does not have an overlock).

After the diapers are ready, they should be washed again, but this time with baby powder (for convenience, I cut them on the floor, so it was impossible to do without washing). Dry, iron - and you can send the entire neat pile to the closet to wait for its time.

Benefit

As you can see, it is very simple to sew the diapers itself - for this you do not need to have any special sewing skills, it is enough to have a typewriter or an overlock in the house.

Directly about the benefit:

  • you get diapers of a comfortable custom size, which will be enough for you for a long time;
  • you save money.

Specifically in numbers. I saw 80 * 110 diapers (simple chintz) in the store at a price of 150 rubles. Given that a calico meter can be bought, say, for 57 rubles (prices at the beginning of 2012). Saving 90 rubles from each diaper!

A warm flannel diaper 75 * 120 in the same store cost as much as 240 rubles at a price of 64 rubles per meter of flannel. Here the savings from a diaper in general are almost 160 rubles.

Of course, you will waste your time, and it can also be estimated to some extent. But, in my opinion, the chores associated with preparing for the appearance of a baby in the house are extremely pleasant. Moreover, you can afford it while on maternity leave after the 30th week of pregnancy.

In addition to diapers for the dowry of your little one, you can sew, and (the pattern is attached).

There is still controversy about swaddling. Perinatal psychologists believe it helps babies feel comfortable, while pediatricians say it slows down the development of certain motor skills. One way or another, it is almost impossible to do without this process in the first months. But what should be the size of diapers for newborns so that they are enough for a full-fledged cocoon and at the same time there is no excess tissue that will only interfere?

Modern manufacturers offer young parents a wide choice, which is easy to get confused about. But upon closer examination of the issue, everything turns out to be not so difficult.

Why is it so difficult to find a diaper size for a newborn? The fact is that today, in addition to standards, there are exclusive models that do not meet any standards.

On the one hand, this is good, because there is plenty to choose from. On the other hand, it is difficult to find out what exactly is right for your baby. We offer the most common parameters that can be found in any store.

  • 60 × 60/70 × 50 (in cm)

Smallest existing diaper size, which is recommended for newborns with low birth weight. Usually microfiber is used for their production.

  • 80 × 95/80 × 120

This is the standard infant diaper size that is considered the most comfortable in the first month of life. Then they can serve as a towel or bedding.

  • 95 × 100/95 × 120

At 2-3 months, the baby begins to behave more actively, trying to break out of the shackles. Yes, and he himself has already grown stronger and has grown a little, so it is worth changing the size of the diaper so that you can wrap it in half.

  • 100 × 100/110 × 110/100 × 120

You can immediately purchase these square nappies to wrap up the newborn warmer and safer from the first days. This is especially true in winter. But in practice, they are recommended mainly for the age of 3-4 months.

  • 120 × 120/150 × 120

This is the most big size diapers and the most expensive. It is usually used by mothers who prefer to swaddle a child for as long as possible or who have a real hero who does not fit into the standard parameters for their age.

  • 120 × 75 (80, 90, 95, 105) / 130 × 90/150 × 90

Cloths of this custom size are used for foot swaddling at night after 3 months.

Based on these data, it is easy to determine what size of diapers is most convenient for newborns in your case. Consider the age of the baby and its weight, as well as what kind of material you prefer. These factors will play an important role in choosing the parameters you need.

Origin of name. The word "diaper" is an ancient Proto-Slavic word, originally it meant "cover, veil".

According to the material

The question of what size diapers are needed for a newborn is very closely related to the material from which they will be made. After all, each fabric has its own peculiarities: some are very elastic and make it possible to stretch the fabric, others, on the contrary, can “sit down” after washing, which means that it is better to purchase them a little more than the specified standard. So be sure to consider this parameter when buying.

  • Batiste

Batiste diapers scare many because they are very thin and tear quickly. On the one hand, this is their disadvantage. On the other hand, it is difficult to find a material that is more breathable and lighter than this one. The optimal parameters of cambric canvases are 120 × 75.

  • Kulirka

Natural cotton based material. The cooler is hypoallergenic, environmentally friendly, stretches well, practically does not wrinkle. For newborns, such diapers are ideal in hot weather. There is only one drawback - this fabric “shrinks” after washing. So do not buy canvases less than 130x90.

  • Microfiber

It is an organic raw material from which disposable diapers are made. They do not need to be washed, they save time, and are sold at an affordable price. However, it is not recommended to use them for regular swaddling. So - to go to the clinic, for example, or to visit. But it is they who assume the most small size(60 × 60, 70 × 50), which allows the use of such a cloth for premature newborns.

  • Chintz

Calico diapers are the most popular for newborns. It is 100% cotton. They are distinguished by their lightness and versatility. They can be used as sheets and towels. In the cold season, a chintz diaper is placed on a flannel - double warmth and softness is obtained. The optimal parameters are 120 × 90 and 130 × 90.

  • Jersey

Knitted nappies are a new model that has gained wide popularity. They are distinguished by their practicality and ease of use. It is placed on top of a flannel to enhance the warmth. In summer, they are used as the main one. It does not tighten the body, it takes absolutely any shape, it is suitable for free swaddling, as it allows the baby to move the arms and legs. You can find the following parameters: 100 × 120, 120 × 95, 130 × 90.

  • Flannel

Flannel nappies are the softest model made from fluffed cotton. They perfectly absorb liquid, allow the skin to breathe freely, retain heat. Can be used as bedspreads in summer, sheets and towels. Usually, the size of a flannel diaper for a newborn is selected in accordance with his age and the method of swaddling, because the range is wide enough: 120 × 75, 120 × 80, 120 × 90, 130 × 90.

  • Footer

Natural brushed cotton fabric, very warm. Diapers made from it are good in winter. Since chintz or cambric canvases are needed for them, the sizes should be slightly larger than those that correspond to the baby's age: 120 × 105 or 130 × 90.

The following table will help you navigate the ratio of the size of the diapers to the material from which they are made.

Through the pages of history. In Russia, the process of swaddling was ceremonial: it was a kind of protection from evil spirits that strove to capture the soul of an infant.

According to age

You can choose the size of the baby diaper in accordance with the age. Despite the fact that in medicine, a newborn is considered a child of only 1 month of life, we will give the parameters up to six months. They may be needed by parents whose children are larger than normal. Or in the event that things are bought for growth at once in whole sets.

Often, the largest canvas is taken and used from the first birthday of the baby and up to 5-6 months. So the information below has been expanded to that age range.

  • 1 month

Here you can choose the size of a standard diaper for newborns - 80 × 95 or 80 × 120 cm. It is the smallest and most convenient for a given age.

  • 2-3 months

For a grown-up kid who at this age is trying to be active, canvases with parameters 95 × 100 or 95 × 120 cm are suitable.

  • 3-4 months

At 3-4 months, you should expect that the child will try to get out of the diaper in every possible way, so you will have to wrap him up in several layers. Here, by the way, the dimensions of 100 × 100/100 × 120/110 × 110 cm will turn out to be.But they can also be used for very small, newborn babies, in the cold season.

  • 5-6 months

Six months - it is up to this age that pediatricians recommend swaddling children. These are already real heroes, for whom diapers measuring 120 × 120 or 150 × 120 cm are suitable. They will be useful for newborns of 1 month of life, if their mothers are supporters of free swaddling.

The data from the table will tell you what size the diaper should be in accordance with age.

If your baby is growing up as a real hero and larger than ordinary children, it is worth taking diapers one size larger. A few useful tips will help you cope with all these nuances.

With the world - on a string. The question that swaddling is harmful to the development of a newborn came from the West, where there is no such practice. However, it should be borne in mind that there is a different climate, in connection with which the features of the formation of a small organism will be somewhat different.

To find the right diaper size for your newborn, follow a few helpful tips:

  1. The size will largely depend on the method of swaddling: for a full one, large ones are required, if up to the armpits - less, for a foot one the smallest in length will fit, but their width should be sufficient.
  2. Before giving birth, purchase 7-8 chintz and the same number of flannel nappies of different sizes: 80 × 90 and 95 × 100.
  3. You can buy large canvases right away. Yes, they will take more time (they dry longer, iron them longer) and money, but they will last a long time.

It's hard not to guess with the size of the newborn diaper. But it is better to take a larger canvas, because the small ones will be cramped, and the crumbs will be uncomfortable and uncomfortable in them.

Well, if the standards do not suit you, you can always sew this thing with my own hands at home. To do this, you do not need to be a first-class seamstress and complete sewing and sewing courses.

It is interesting. In Russia, the child was swaddled with the words: "Endure the cold, need, any bad weather and adversity - be a man."

We sew ourselves

If you decide to sew a diaper for a newborn with your own hands, you can experiment with the sizes, if for some reason you are not satisfied with the standard ones that are sold in stores. What is needed for this?

  1. The sewing machine is in working order.
  2. Material: chintz, flannel or jersey. To save money, you can take old sheets, from which you get several canvases.
  3. Wash the fabric.
  4. For a pattern, you need to decide what size you will be sewing diapers. You can use the data above and take the standard sizes. You can estimate by eye or take measurements from your crumbs and make a thing in accordance with individual data.
  5. Make fabric markings.
  6. To cut.
  7. Hem and overlock the edges, or simply fold back.
  8. Wash.
  9. Iron.

In accordance with the above tables and recommendations, you can easily calculate the optimal diaper size for a newborn in accordance with his age and weight.

If the smallest are suitable for the first days, then after a few weeks the grown-up hero will need to increase the amount of cloth for swaddling so that he feels comfortable. This process must be constantly monitored.

A do-it-yourself diaper for newborn babies is good because you can choose individual sizes for the baby, choose the fabric of the desired color and quality.

Learning to sew a diaper for newborn babies with our own hands

Cocoon-shaped diapers are especially popular now, because it is easier to swaddle a baby in them, and the shape of the diaper is comfortable for him. But before you sew the diaper, you will have to make a pattern, for example, as in the photo below.

Usually the size is as follows: 24 cm by 52 cm or 29 cm by 63 cm. Also, when making a pattern yourself, you need to take into account the space for the baby's movement. It is best to choose natural fabric. It can be knitted cotton or flannel. The seams of the diaper do not need to be folded. It is better if they are stitched with a zigzag seam or overlaid.

Also, before you start sewing, you need to cut out the back, collar, lining, two front parts and a protective strip. And for the fastener, you need to buy a zipper of the required length in advance.

The edges of the fastening point of the fastener and the zipper are glued with a stitching tape, and on sewing machine you need to sew the edges of the protective strip. The seam allowance is cut off near the line.

Next, a zipper is placed on the turned-out bar, which is glued with glue for textiles, and then sewn on a sewing machine. Before connecting at the bottom of the shelf, you need to mark by attaching a bar. After that, the strips are sewn separately from the main fabric, and then from the lining. The backrest is folded separately from the main and lining fabric. It is fixed with pins and then sewn over with an overlock.

So that the seams do not interfere with the child, a collar must be stitched to the cutout, leaving 6-8 cm for the zipper from the side cut. The collar folds in half and is sewn to the main product. It should be between the lining and main fabric. Further, the fabric is bent over a zipper, and then finally sewn on.

The cocoon diaper is ready! It does not threaten the health of the child, in contrast to tight swaddling, and it is very convenient for her to use, because such a diaper is made of natural material and with mother's love.

Let's analyze a lesson on creating a baby diaper with Velcro

The baby diaper with Velcro is very convenient to use, and how to sew it is shown in this master class.

You can buy a Velcro diaper at a store, or you can make it yourself. To do this, you need a cotton fabric measuring 24 cm by 52 cm or 29 cm by 63 cm. But the sizes of the diaper for the baby are different. Some mothers, who know how quickly babies grow, buy diapers that are larger, because then you can avoid frequent swaddling. The kid grows up and becomes more active and then tries in every possible way to leave the tight cocoon.

Square diapers are more comfortable than triangular diapers. But if a triangular diaper is chosen, then a size of 0.9m by 1.2m is suitable. In the case when a diaper is needed only for the first few months from birth, it is better to choose a size of 0.9m by 1.0m or 0.85m by 0.9m. If the diaper is made of flannel, then it should be 10-20cm wider and longer than the printed one.

Before you start sewing a Velcro diaper, you need to make a pattern. She is shown in the photo below.

It is better to transfer the drawing to checkered paper. One cell is 0.5 cm, and knowing these dimensions, it will be easier to navigate in the drawing. The pattern can also be made by hand.

If the diaper for the newborn should be insulated, then the same fragments should be cut out of the padding polyester. Details from padding polyester are laid and secured with pins. The fabric can be chosen different color, but it is better to observe the tonality for beauty.

Further, the drawing can be transferred to the fabric from which the diaper will be sewn. Its width should be approximately 85 cm and length 50 cm. These dimensions are arbitrary and are designed for a very small child. If the baby is older, then the diaper should be larger.

Now two pieces are cut out of the main fabric. One solid, and the second with legs. Then everything can be sewn. Leave the holes in the leg area so that the inside of the diaper can be straightened out.

Now you can sew Velcro to the shelves of the diaper. It is better to take long and wide ones so that the baby's body is securely fixed in the diaper. Velcro is better than a zip lock and because you can adjust how tightly the baby is swaddled. Such diapers are used mainly at night, because the stable fastening provides the baby with a deep sleep. The velcro straps hold the baby's body tightly, and it does not open. A drawstring is inserted into the hood of the diaper so that it sits securely on the baby's head and does not fall off. This diaper is a great alternative to a regular diaper.

Video selection on the topic of the article

And in the video below, sewing diapers for babies quickly and easily with your own hands is clearly demonstrated.

No matter what doctors say about changing babies, diapers in the first few months of life will be an indispensable assistant in caring for a baby. The prices in stores for such an important accessory are far from always acceptable, and the goods offered on the markets do not always meet all the requirements. caring mothers who strive to give only the best to their babies. That is why we offer you to make diapers with your own hands, detailed master classes which we will provide you with in this article.

Types of diapers

Diapers are an old invention, for many centuries of their use they have transformed from ordinary, familiar to us, pieces of fabric, into various types that simplify the life of the baby and mother in specific situations. We will now talk about this in detail.

Such nappies are used for swaddling babies, products made of soft and warm fabrics can serve as a towel after taking a bath, as they are very absorbent and will not let the baby freeze. You can also use ordinary swaddling clothes to cover the baby's crib or cover the baby with it instead of a blanket, if it's warm at home. Diapers will not be superfluous when changing a diaper. And also, it is always worth having an extra pair of nice clean diapers to go to the doctor. Ordinary diapers can be sewn from any fabrics suitable for making baby diapers (you can read more about this below, in the section "Variety of materials for sewing diapers: which option to choose?").

These diapers have different sizes, which are selected according to the height and weight of the baby. You can read more about this in the section "Universal sizes of diapers for babies by months"

Swaddling sheets

These nappies are designed to cover a baby cot. They are made to fit the size of the crib, for rectangular, round or oval cribs. Can be sewn from any materials acceptable for diapers.

The diaper-sheet can be laid on top of a waterproof oilcloth, or under it, and then an ordinary diaper

Reusable waterproof nappies

Such nappies are sewn with an additional waterproof layer, in addition to the usual fabric. They can also be made from any material suitable for diapers. Their convenience lies in the fact that when using them, you do not need to additionally enclose a bulky oilcloth, which often moves out.

The waterproof layer can be sewn both to an ordinary diaper and to a diaper-sheet

Diapers-cocoons

Cocoon nappies are a relatively recent invention. They are designed specifically for swaddling a baby. They are of two types:

Any nappies-cocoons are sewn from elastic fabrics, thanks to which the baby feels comfortable in them, without flinching from his own, not yet controlled movements, and having the opportunity to calmly move inside the “cocoon” and position himself as it is convenient for him. This ensures a restful sleep for the baby and the peace of the mother. And, of course, one cannot ignore such an advantage as ease of use and simplicity and instant swaddling, which greatly facilitates taking care of the baby, saving mother's precious energy.

Necessary types of diapers for a baby in the first months of life and their number

There is no unequivocal answer to the question of what kind of diapers a baby needs and in what quantity. But it will not be superfluous general recommendations, after reading which you can determine the best option for yourself.

  • Swaddling sheets. You can sew just a couple of these diapers to cover the mattress in a crib, and put a waterproof oilcloth and an ordinary diaper on top, changing the latter if necessary. In this case, you only need a pair of nappies, sheets, but 10-15 ordinary nappies. Or you can lay a waterproof oilcloth directly on the mattress, and on top of the diaper-sheet, which you will change every time it gets dirty. In this case, for use in the crib, you just do not need ordinary diapers.
  • You will need such nappies without fail, about 10 pieces: for a stroller - 2-3 pieces, for going to the doctor - 2 pieces, for changing diapers - 2-3 pieces, as a towel after taking a bath - 2 pieces ... (in the event that you do not have soft baby towels), in reserve - 1-2 pcs. (to shelter the baby, close from the wind, etc.). Also, if you decide to swaddle the baby in an ordinary diaper, you will need to prepare 10 more pieces in addition to the above.
  • Waterproof diapers. Beyond the extreme necessity, there is no such diapers, but if there is an opportunity to create additional conveniences for yourself and your baby, why not? As already mentioned above, the waterproof layer can be sewn both to ordinary diapers and to diaper sheets. Therefore, depending on your preference between these two options, it is best to use diapers with a waterproof layer in the following cases: for covering the bed (to further protect the mattress from getting wet and dirty), in a stroller, for changing diapers and for going to the doctor (babies tend to do unexpected things, regardless of time and place, so it is better to play it safe and take a waterproof diaper with you).
  • Diapers-cocoons. You will need such diapers only if you decide to swaddle the baby, but do not want to restrain his movements with ordinary diapers. They will need from 3 to 7 pieces.

Recently my second baby was born and, based on the experience with the first child and on our lifestyle, I chose the ideal option for using diapers: I cover the baby crib with waterproof diapers, sheets, we have 3 of them, I don't use anything else on top, so like in a crib, the baby only sleeps and always sleeps in a diaper, so it makes no sense to lay something extra. For going to the doctor, we have one waterproof diaper and one regular one. I also use waterproof nappies in the stroller (we have 3 of them). To change diapers I use ordinary cloth diapers, since we have a table with oilcloth, and changing diapers after each diaper change is somehow more hygienic. To dry the baby after taking a bath, I use a thin diaper, and then immediately wrap the baby in a warm soft towel with a corner so that he does not lie in a wet and freeze. He sleeps well in "cocoons", we don't use ordinary diapers for swaddling at all. We bought 7 pieces of nappies-cocoons, but 3-5 are enough, since the baby only sleeps in them, and during wakefulness it is better to give maximum freedom for movement and development.

Mandatory requirements for baby diapers

Newborns and nursing babies need special care, they have very delicate skin and an organism that has not yet learned to defend itself from this world, so everything that comes into contact with the baby must meet specific requirements, including the diaper. Before buying materials and starting sewing, consider the following points:

  • since the diapers are in close contact with the baby's skin, all their seams should be on the front side and very carefully processed;
  • in no case should any threads stick out; when pulled, they can damage or even cut the delicate skin of the crumbs;
  • the fabrics from which the diapers are sewn must be natural and of high quality, so as not to cause allergies in the child;
  • if you decide to sew cocoon diapers with a zipper, then you will need to sew it on very carefully so that the stiff fabric of the fastener does not harm the baby during wearing, it is also best to sew the zipper with front side, after all, beauty is in the background here;
  • if you sew "cocoons" with Velcro, you should also be very careful, all borders should be aligned exactly, and the sizes are chosen correctly so that the Velcro does not harm the skin;
  • it is advisable to avoid various additional decorative details in the form of ruffles, bows, etc., as this will only interfere with you and your baby.

If you carefully consider the observance of all of the above points, you can not worry about the high comfort and safety of your child.

Variety of materials for sewing diapers: which option to choose?

There is a great variety of materials for sewing diapers on the market now: thin and warm and soft, stretchy and dense, etc., so as not to get confused in all this variety, it is worth identifying the criteria that fabrics for baby diapers must meet:

  • high quality;
  • natural composition;
  • the fabric should "breathe", that is, it should allow air to pass through well, so that the baby's skin does not ooze and it does not feel hot;
  • the fabric should absorb moisture well;
  • it should be soft and pleasant to the touch, so as not to harm the delicate skin of the baby;
  • must have the ability not to overheat the baby's body and at the same time retain enough heat so that there is no hypothermia;
  • durability, since it is necessary to wash the diapers very often, they must withstand repeated washings without losing their important properties.

The following materials correspond to all the listed properties:

  • Chintz. Inexpensive thin material made from 100% cotton. This is the basic option and the most common option. The nappies made of this material are soft and pleasant to the body, quickly absorb moisture, and meet all the necessary requirements. Calico nappies are best for summer or very warm / hot environments.
  • Flannel. One of the most beloved material by moms. Composition - 100% cotton. The material is very delicate, due to the light cannon, quite warm and at the same time breathable. Flannel nappies are basic, they should be in any season.
  • Natural knitwear. You can hardly find ordinary diapers made of this material; it is mainly used for sewing cocoon diapers. Its main advantage is its high elongation.
  • Batiste. This material is one of the lightest and most breathable. Ideal for the warm season. A good analogue of chintz. But, also cambric has one significant drawback - low strength, so cambric diapers will not last long for you.
  • Kulirka. The stuff is pretty good, but not particularly common. Consists of 100% cotton. It is highly hypoallergenic, environmentally friendly, does not wrinkle and stretches very well. Nappies made of this material are ideal for the warm season. The only thing worth paying attention to is a noticeable shrinkage of the fabric after washing, so you need to buy fabric with a margin, and before sewing the product, be sure to wash and iron it.
  • Footer. It is a very warm and heat-retaining material. Ideal for the cold season. Very pleasant to the body.

Note! The truth about the composition of the material is far from always written on the label, so it is better to buy materials in trusted stores, if you are not sure about the quality of the product, it is better not to purchase it, and to find a better option, even if it costs more, you cannot save on the child's health.

Advantages and disadvantages of self-sewing diapers for a baby

There are not so many points among the disadvantages:

  • The most basic and decisive, perhaps, will be time.
  • And among others - a significantly greater amount of energy and effort spent on the choice of all necessary materials and on the sewing process itself.

There will be much more advantages:

  • The main thing is that the strength and love you put in during the manufacturing process will warm both you and the baby, forming a positive relationship between you even before the baby is born. This can easily prove the well-known truths for a long time that children feel everything and that love is a verb, the more we love someone with our actions, we care, the more we love this person.
  • If we talk about the more practical side of the issue, then the facts are very important that you can independently choose the fabric that suits your exact requirements, fabric, its properties, colors, pattern.
  • In the process of sewing, you can correct specific nuances for yourself.
  • Also, sewing diapers on your own will cost significantly less than if you bought the same amount from the same material, but ready-made.

We sew ordinary diapers for the baby

Ordinary diapers are the easiest to make; even those who have never come into contact with sewing can cope with this matter.

Universal sizes of diapers for babies by months

The most important thing to do before sewing is to figure out the size of the diapers that you need. To do this, carefully study the table in the picture below:

Not all children meet the standard parameters of weight and height, designated as the norm in different months life, so when sewing diapers, pay attention to the height and weight, and not to the age of the crumbs

Thanks to this table, you will be able to determine exactly what size of diapers you need. After you figure this out, you can start calculating the fabric needed for sewing diapers. In the photo below you will see a table with side lengths for each diaper size.

Since babies grow very quickly in the first few months of life, we recommend choosing an average size that is suitable for both a newborn and an already grown baby.

Advice! To save fabric for length, count the shorter side, since all fabrics come in standard sizes in a width of 1.40 / 1.50 cm, calculating the fabric in this way, you will significantly save money.

For example, if you need 10 swaddling clothes in size 48, multiply the length (shortest side) - 120 cm by 10 (number). It will turn out to be 12 meters. This means that you will need 12 m to sew so many diapers of the selected size.

MK for sewing an ordinary diaper

Necessary materials:

  • the cloth;
  • threads in the color of the fabric;
  • a sewing machine or overlock (if there is no machine, then it is quite possible to handle it with your hands);
  • scissors;
  • a large tailor's ruler or just a long stick, along which it will be convenient to draw a straight line on the fabric;
  • tape measure.

In order to sew an ordinary diaper, you must follow the steps below sequentially:

The diaper is ready! Sew the same number of diapers as you need.

Advice! To make it easier to cut the fabric, place another material with a "catching" surface under it, such as fleece or a blanket. This way the fabric will not slide over the surface and you can easily cope with the task.

How to sew a waterproof layer to a diaper: a step-by-step guide

Materials required to transform a regular diaper into a waterproof diaper:

  • waterproof fabric;
  • oblique inlay.

In order to make the diaper waterproof, it is enough to follow all the steps of the following instructions:

  1. When making a regular diaper, stop after the cutting step. No need to process the edges!
  2. Now it is necessary to cut a piece from a waterproof fabric that exactly matches the size of the diaper to which it will be sewn.
  3. Take both pieces of fabric and fold them together, wrong sides inward. Sweep around the edges on your hands.

    The fabric is washed by hand with large stitches of a contrasting color of the thread relative to the fabric. This is necessary in order for the edges of the products to match as closely as possible. After the finishing seam on a typewriter, this seam must be removed by pulling on the thread

  4. Now it remains only to process the edges with a bias tape. To do this, put it on one of the sides of the creased workpiece (you can start from either side).

    You need to sew on the very edge to get it neatly

  5. And sew around the edge, folding back the ironed side.

    Sewing on a bias tape Sewing on a bias tape Try not to "dance" the seam, then the product will turn out beautiful and neat

  6. Then turn the piece over to the other side. It should look like this:

    This is how a bias tape sewn on one side looks like

  7. Fold over the other side of the bias tape and iron with an iron.

    In order for the product to exactly turn out neat, before stitching the machine line, you can make a sweep on your hands

  8. Now start the final line over the bias tape.

    This is how the bias tape should look if you did everything right.

  9. After you have processed all the edges of the waterproof diaper with a bias tape, iron all the seams well with an iron, pulling slightly.

This is how the finished waterproof diaper should look like:

Waterproof diapers made in this way can be washed as many times as necessary without any fear.

Important! After the diapers, be sure to wash them with special baby powder with conditioner and iron them thoroughly on both sides.

MK for sewing nappies-cocoons with different types of fasteners

Sewing of nappies-cocoons differs from each other not only by different fasteners, but also by the entire pattern of the product as a whole, therefore we offer you MK for the manufacture of both types.

MK on sewing a diaper-cocoon with a zipper

Materials required for sewing:

  • knitted fabric;
  • collar elastic (can be cut off from old clothes);
  • threads in the color of the fabric;
  • needle;
  • scissors;
  • sewing machine;
  • special foot and machine needles for sewing knitwear;
  • 2 zippers 45 cm each;
  • tape measure;
  • tailor's chalk or remnant;
  • ruler.

Step-by-step instructions for sewing a cocoon diaper with a zipper with your own hands:

  1. Lay the fabric on the table, attach the patterns to it with safety pins, circle with the help of tailor's chalk. Cut out the resulting details.

    For convenience, lay out all the sewing parts on the table.

  2. Now take the zippers and remove the delimiters from both:

    The stoppers must be removed carefully so as not to damage the zipper teeth.

  3. This is how the zippers should look after removing the restraints:

    The restraints can be thrown out after removal, they are no longer needed

  4. Now place the two front pieces of the cocoon (shelves) in front of you, wrong side up. Measure 1.5 cm from the inside of each piece and draw a straight line from top to bottom. Then fold the fabric to the right side along the lines you have drawn and iron it with an iron.

    Knitted fabric is very moody, it has a tendency to curl at the edges, this can be easily dealt with by carefully ironing

  5. Turn the parts upside down and place the two zipper halves on the folded edges. Baste them by hand until the green mark, and then sew on the sewing machine, after removing the basting.

    Sew on zipper on sewing machine should be as close to the teeth as possible

  6. Now, following the instructions in the photo below, turn a regular zipper into a two-way one:

    In some stores you can find a ready-made two-way zipper

  7. Cut off the excess part of the zipper on the right side and turn the structure over:

    In the process of sewing on a zipper, be very careful, as the slightest oversight can ruin the zipper or the product.

  8. From the scraps of fabric, sew a 3 by 60 strip:

    A protective strip is essential to reduce the risk of injury when using a zipper

  9. Place a protective strip under the zipper on the inside of the garment and sew on the sewing machine:

    If you are afraid to start the machine line immediately, then you can first secure the strip with safety pins or make a broom

  10. Now fold back the remaining tip and stitch it in too:

    Try to work as carefully as possible on the sewing machine, as it will be very difficult to dissolve a failed machine seam, especially with fastening.

  11. Cut off the extra piece of fabric:

    To prevent the machine seams from unraveling after trimming, do not forget to make a bartack.

  12. Sew along the edge, along the entire cocoon, a protective strip:

    Thanks to the protective strip, the baby will be protected from possible damage

  13. Sew the front and back pieces and overcast the edges.

    After each new seam, iron it thoroughly with an iron, with light tension.

  14. Sew on the elastic collar:

    This is how the neck of the product should look like with a neatly sewn collar.

The zippered cocoon swaddle is ready!

MK for sewing a diaper-cocoon with Velcro

Required materials for sewing a Velcro cocoon diaper:

  • flannel knitted fabric;
  • cotton knitted fabric;
  • Velcro;
  • tape measure;
  • scissors;
  • threads in the color of the fabric;
  • needle;
  • sewing machine;
  • ruler;
  • tailor's chalk or remnant;
  • tracing paper.

In order to sew a Velcro cocoon swaddle, follow the instructions:

  1. Wash and iron the fabric so that the finished garment does not shrink after sewing. Spread the material out on the table.
  2. Draw a pattern of the main part on tracing paper and cut it out using the following pictures:

    To make the patterns as accurate as possible, you can use graph paper

  3. Do the same with the leg pocket pattern:

    Transfer the patterns from paper to fabric and cut as accurately as possible, since the slightest mistake can ruin the entire product

  4. Lay out the resulting patterns on the fabric, pin with pins, circle with chalk. Then cut it out.
  5. Fold both pieces right-side-in to each other. Sew and finish the edges. Then sew Velcro on the side of the product, and place one on the top of the leg pocket.

    This is how the finished cocoon diaper should look like

The cocoon diaper is ready!

Advice! It is better to sew the hard part of the Velcro onto the part of the product that cannot touch the baby's body, so that if the Velcro erodes a little during wearing, the hard part does not travel over the skin and damage it.

How to cover the bed: bed sheets or sheets with an elastic band?

Before deciding on the answer to this question, you should figure out what is the difference between an ordinary diaper-sheet and a sheet with an elastic band. The difference between them is only two: a sheet with an elastic band is the same ordinary diaper-sheet, but with an elastic band sewn along the edge and rounded corners, and it is also sewn from a stretching knitted fabric. It can also be made in all sizes and shapes to match the mattress perfectly. The advantages of such a sheet are that it is securely fixed to the mattress thanks to an elastic band, and a well-chosen fabric fits perfectly onto the mattress without folds or excess fabric.

When my first son began to grow up and learned to crawl, the sheet in the crib had to be constantly corrected, because from his active movements the edges were always crawling out from under the mattress, no matter how deeply and reliably I tucked them in. The ideal solution was to replace such ordinary sheets with sheets with an elastic band. They fit very tightly on the mattress and hold on to it securely. Thanks to this, the child can play calmly, and the mother is not afraid that the baby will crush the sheet and stain the mattress.

MK for sewing sheets with an elastic band

Required materials for sewing:

  • knitted fabric;
  • scissors;
  • needle;
  • elastic;
  • sewing machine;
  • special foot and needles for working with knitted fabrics;
  • tape measure;
  • tailor's ruler;
  • cloth chalk or remnants;
  • threads in the color of the fabric.

Step-by-step instructions for sewing a sheet with an elastic band:

  1. Measure the width, length and height of the mattress on which you are going to sew the product. We add 20 cm to the length and width of the mattress + the height of the mattress for each value so that the finished sheet is in size and fits well on the mattress. Then add another 14 cm to both measurements for the hem of the fabric for sewing in the elastic.
  2. We measure the resulting lengths on the fabric, put dots in the right places and connect them with a chalk and a tailor's ruler. Cut out.

    Be sure to iron the cut piece of fabric so that all measurements and the cut out part are accurate

  3. Fold the resulting piece of fabric in half so that all four corners are in one place.

    The fabric must be folded in such a way as to make the correct cut and form the desired shape of the corners of the product.

  4. Calculate how much you need to cut: to the height of the mattress add half of the increase for sewing the elastic (14–7 = 7), ie, the height of the mattress + 7. Then subtract 2 cm from the resulting figure for allowances. This number is the length of the sides of the square to be cut. Draw a square of this size from the corner of the fabric and cut out:

    It is necessary to cut a square so that the finished sheet sits on the mattress as well as possible, the main thing is to correctly calculate all the lengths

  5. Now unfold the fabric and lay it seamy side up on the table. Mark the distance from the edge by 2.5 cm on all sides:

    To make it more convenient, after measuring the required values, draw a line

  6. Fold the edges of the fabric twice, one exactly along the drawn line, the other with a reference to the fabric of the same size (2.5 cm). Iron and unfold again.

    Ironing the fabric with an iron is necessary for easier sewing in the future.

  7. Connect the corners with the right side inward and sew from top to bottom:

    Be sure to secure machine stitching on both sides

  8. Do the same for all corners and turn out:

    This is how the finished corners should look like on the front side of the product.

  9. Now sew the edges of the sheet along the lines you ironed earlier. Insert the elastic.

And for babies up to a year and a half, diapers, perhaps, remain favorites. And although disposable diapers and special moisture-absorbing sheets made of synthetic materials are gradually replacing this item from the list of necessary purchases, you still need to have diapers (flannel, chintz or flannel) on hand.

The very tenderness

Having listened to the advice of experienced mothers and grandmothers, newly minted mothers are not always in a hurry to follow the instructions of the older generation. This is not surprising - a few decades ago, few people guessed that the endless washing of wet and dirty sheets from the beds and cradles of beloved babies would become not a harsh reality, but a sad past.

Manufacturers offer a wide variety of diaper options that can be changed and discarded immediately after small and large troubles, or reused by removing special inserts from them. It goes without saying that it is not at all necessary to have 15-20 diapers in your arsenal. A reasonable question arises: why are they needed then? The answer, in fact, is simple and obvious. There are completely different diapers - flannel, chintz, calico or flannel - each of these types should be present in a children's chest of drawers. Baby's delicate and sensitive skin simply cannot be covered all the time.

The child will not be in clothes around the clock, he needs to arrange air baths, change clothes, in addition, it is convenient to cover the crib or the bottom of the stroller with diapers, throw them on the parent's sofa or large bed,

First of all, a diaper is a piece of fabric made of natural material, created especially for children, taking into account their requirements. High-quality baby fabrics do not contain synthetic additives, are dyed with non-toxic dyes and have an eye-pleasing design (this is important both for the mother herself and for the child who has to spend the lion's share of their time surrounded by all this splendor).

What is flannel?

For baby diapers use different materials... Of course, chintz is the most popular because of its cheapness and subtlety. But chintz and flannel diapers have a number of differences and are needed, probably, in almost the same quantity. Only the first is a more suitable option for summer and home use, and the second is for cold winters, visits to the doctor or walking outside.

Flannel can be made in several ways, but it is always cotton. Manufacturers use different variants weaving of threads (twill or plain), making the fabric with a thin pile, which ensures the softness and tenderness of the material.

The width of the flannel is standard:

  • 75 cm;
  • 90 cm;
  • 150 cm;
  • 180 cm.

It is also worth distinguishing between flannel designed specifically for children's things (bedding, linen and suits for newborns) and one that is created for other purposes (shirt, dressing gown, for diapers and contains a minimum of dyes, impregnations that prevent quick wear or damage by insects, passes stricter control of compliance with quality standards.

Underwear diapers

The departments with clothes and other goods for babies are full of beautiful suits, dresses, among which there are rompers and undershirts familiar to everyone, as well as new wardrobe items for many, such as bodysuits, slips and sandals.

A distinctive feature of clothes and bedding for babies is that the fabric should be soft and safe, and in the models themselves, internal seams are excluded, which can easily rub the skin or bring discomfort to the child.

The same goes for bed linen. Flannel baby diapers come in different sizes, it all depends on the original width of the roll of fabric and the needs of the mother. A prerequisite is that their edges are not swept with an ordinary seam, where the fabric cut is tucked in. If you make it yourself, you need to sweep it by hand or process it with an overlock, the same requirements apply to finished products. An exception may be a flannel diaper, which is not intended for swaddling a baby.

It's important to know!

So, what should you pay attention to when buying fabric for sewing diapers or ready-made flannel sheets?

  1. Quality fabric - real flannel is 100% cotton.
  2. There may be a drawing on the material, but flannel diapers are, first of all, an accessory for sleeping and rest, so it is better to avoid bright and colorful images.
  3. The material should be soft, pleasant to the touch, in principle there are no defects in the form of knots, pellets or other irregularities on the canvas, the pile is mainly located on one, front side.
  4. The size of the diaper needs to be selected based on your own needs - it will be impossible to make the bed too small, it will constantly wrinkle and move, forming uncomfortable folds.

Application

Diapers, including flannel ones, are no longer used for their original purpose - tight swaddling of the baby. Modern children's doctors and psychologists strongly advise against complicating the life of the child and himself by wrapping him in a cocoon. It is necessary to free the child so as not to limit his freedom, to give the opportunity to move freely, however, you can wrap the legs with a diaper or not tightly wrap the whole baby in it, if he wakes himself up during sleep.

This will enable the child to fall asleep calmly and not hit himself during rest. The flannel diaper will provide a comfortable sleep, thanks to such material qualities as hygroscopicity, naturalness and good breathability. Even if the baby sweats a little while sleeping, the cotton tang will quickly absorb moisture, which will help to avoid prickly heat and skin irritation.

In addition, flannel diapers for newborns are an excellent option for sheltering, they are light and not parked, taking the sheet with them for a walk, the mother can always cover the baby from the wind and the sun.

Finished goods

Children's stores offer a wide range of ready-made diapers, bed sheets of regular cut and those with elastic bands, thanks to which they can be easily and securely attached to the mattress. The fabric can also be completely different - chintz, calico, knitwear. For cooler seasons, it is best to use flannel diapers.

The size directly depends on what fabric they are sewn from. It is believed that the length of the finished product is 110-120 cm, and the width depends on the parameters of the source material. Not so long ago, manufacturers did not offer fabrics more than 90 cm wide, but now the assortment is much wider and more diverse.

The standard size of flannel diapers for a newborn is 90 cm by 110 cm, in the atelier or shops selling not only finished products, but also tailoring bed linen to order, you can order the most suitable size bed sheets.

What you should pay attention to?

Experienced mothers advise buying about five standard-size diapers. Each of them will definitely come in handy, because there are many ways to use it. Simple square or rectangular cuts can be used as sheets and bedspreads, swaddle the baby in them, put on the bottom of the bath to avoid child contact with metal or plastic. For bathing, they also sell flannel nappies with a hood on the corner. This model is a great alternative to heavy terry towels.

Flannel nappies should be distinguished from flannel and boozy ones, which also belong to fluffy fabrics, but they are slightly denser and rougher to the touch. Their fluffy villi are located on the front and seamy side, which gives them a rougher texture.

One stitch and two stitch

It is easy and simple to buy ready-made flannel diapers (photos of various fabrics with children's patterns), but it will not be difficult to sew them with your own hands. As mentioned above, bends and any seams in the garment should be avoided. If the width or length of the cut is not enough to make the product of the desired size, it is best to look for another fabric. In addition, the sellers are well aware of how much material to take for baby diapers and will be happy to answer all the buyer's questions.
